i always thought llewellyn meens lionsoul (llew =lion and ellyn= soul)
:But the name is very old, and I don't think lions lived in Wales in the middle ages. Llewellyn includes "Llewellyn Publications". Would it be ok to change that to "Llewellyn Worldwide"? (since "Llewellyn Worldwide" is company name used at llewellyn.com) --EarthFurst 23:35, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
:Yeah, good catch. I haven't started that article yet, but LP can just be a redirect. -- nae'blis 19:06, 8 August 2006 (UTC)
Llewellyn versus Llewelyn
The content of this article is reproduced in Llywelyn. Since the latter form is used throughout this article (which calls Llewellyn a bastardisation!) and since that is also the form used by the majority of individuals linked to in this article, I suggest making this article a redirect. garik 18:20, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

Personally, I would use the terms bastardization or blasphemization if the spelling was altered to created what was a less positive meaning than the original - and everything else an "acquired" meaning/definition/etymology. The person seems to be using the term for anything which makes the name less pure than the original (because the "ll" has a much different sound than "l" - one online source compared "ll" to the "cl/hl" sound we associate with hludwig).

Llewelyn seems to be the earlier form and llewellyn the modern one. Besides being the welsh form of lugobelenus (llew/Lleu the welsh form of Lug, lugh) and Belyn short for Belenus) - it has other possible etymologies. It could be that llewelyn is the welsh form of the name lugubelenus/lugobelinos just like Lewis/Louis are sometimes used as the english forms of llewelyn - or that it is what gave us the name llewelyn to begin with - or some combination of the two. Would feel better if there were more intermediate forms.
Split or merge to Llewellyn
There's far more articles for Llewellyn than Llywelyn and other spelling variants have their own articles rather than being lumped or redirected here, such as Llewellin.

Merge proposal
I propose merging Llywelyn (name) into Llywelyn. The etymology and history sections in Llywelyn (name) can be easily described in here without any problems. I think this page could use a similar structure as Charles, for example. GilaMonster536 (talk) 02:40, 3 March 2026 (UTC)
