Proposed merge of Bengalis in Myanmar with Bengali Hindus in Myanmar
[edit source]No idea why discussion is required for an obvious article which is supposed to be one article as a whole, separate article (as suggested by a user in revision of this article) would get merged anyway into one. I propose this moving to Bengalis in Myanmar and restoring previous version as religion in the title is not necessary and is not common for a small article. Furthermore, the article is already reviewed by experts and some users.. Also as per history of Myanmar and Arakan, there is good presence of sources indicating Bengalis in Myanmar as a whole written neutrally.. Refer to the supposed move version here WinKyaw (talk) 04:31, 12 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Win Kyaw:, This article is about Bengali Hindus. You moved the article first, and then added content about "Bengali Muslims," trying to craft it into what you want, without discussion. Wikipedia is not a personal soapbox. Let's break it down: most of this seems to imply the Myanmar government's racist talking point that "Rohingya are non-native Bengalis from South Asia that need to be removed" that they use to justify the genocide as noted on the Rohingya article, which has been debunked. That in and of itself is not encyclopedic. (see this Time Magazine article, for instance.)
- Also, of the seven sources you added:
- 1 ("Aye Chan 2005") appears to link to Wikipedia itself and is cited 3 times.
- 1 is a source that does not work and also parrots the government's talking points on Rohingyas by calling Rohingyas "Bengali." When i found the archived version [1], I noticed it used very inflammatory biased wording and claims like "Rohingya campaigners," and claiming at the end that "Rohingya/Bengali community we've seen today had already shaping up as of 1942."
- 1 is used 2 times and has no information ([2])
- If you want to talk about Bengali Muslims, I personally think that would not be valid since Bengali Muslim was not even a real concept historically (as you know, before the partition of "British India," there wasn't any real borders or concept of "Bengali" or "Pakistani," and Rohingya are not Bengali. I'm not saying you are racist, I'm choosing the path to help you and trying to level with you here. This article should not be moved and recreated into something that very controversially conflates Rohingya people with Bengalis. It is not encyclopedic nor is it factually or morally correct. - R9tgokunks ⭕ 06:03, 12 March 2026 (UTC)
- So you're saying this article should focus on only current affairs?..the terming is not complicated historically. History confirms Bengali Muslim settlements in Myanmar with poet Alaol and Daulat Qazi being notable Bengali Muslims in the region in past. This itself confirms their settlement in Myanmar. Sources easily confirm historically there were Bengali Muslims (Migrants also gradually filtered into Arakan from neighboring Muslim Bengal, Migration from Bengal to Arakan during British Rule 1826-1948)... You are trying to remove history. Wikipedia doesn't state "write articles only on current basis and 2000s history".. History cannot be removed just because u don't like it. The terming might be complicated in 2000s, but historically it is not.. Myanmar government has no role here because this article talks about both Bengali Hindus & Muslims settlement & their population presence in a neighbourhood country throughout world HISTORY. You are also cherry-picking sources saying ur sources r correct while mines are not.. Well, your sources are itself enough to state the term Bengali Muslims itself is popular within the country.. The terming itself can be separate section in the article which I already have written neutrally in the original version.. Please do not try to remove history.
- Lastly, For the first statement u made about WP is not soapbox or stuff, all extended users are eligible to move pages and write articles, you're kind of asking me to take permission for every small edit I make (For new readers, please see the above user's editing history). - I'm not sure what the proposed "merge" here is. Seems like it should be a RM and a discussion on the scope of the topic. I do agree with @R9tgokunks that some of the content being proposed does violate WP:NPOV.
- That being said, I do agree with the underlying idea here that we should cover Bengali Muslim communities in Myanmar- there are Bengalis who happen to be Muslim in various parts of Myanmar beyond the Rohingya debate. An article covering the Bengali diaspora in Myanamr generally also make senses to me. Creating two articles (Bengali Hindus in Myanmar and Bengali Muslims in Myanmar) could be a WP:POVFORK unless there are reliable sources that strongly differentiate between the two. In my view, having some article specifically about Bengali Muslims will invite more narratives about Rohingya being Bengali Muslims than if they were covered as part of a larger article about Burmese Bengalis, that then talks about religious makeup as part of that article. - It needs to go to the stable version with the title Bengalis in Myanmar and written neutrally. The POVFORK was suggested by R9tgokunks himself on edit summary during move. Anyone is free to edit and make changes. WinKyaw (talk) 14:58, 12 March 2026 (UTC)
- as per EmeraldRange noted about the article suggestion of Bengali diaspora/community in Myanmar, my proposal is similar as I'm asking to move this page to the supposed unbiased version which is this one. It might need a few rephrase, copyedits and sourcing, then its done. The above user R9tgokunks who moved this page has a misunderstanding about Bengali history of Myanmar, assumes its all about Rohingya which is incorrect and it has more information sourced which I gave beyond that. Hence I propose mainly moving this article to Bengalis in Myanmar. WinKyaw (talk) 06:19, 13 March 2026 (UTC)
